Instrument Overview
The violin is the highest-pitched member of the violin family of string instruments. The violin is also sometimes called a fiddle, usually when referring to it as a folk instrument. The acoustic violin is usually made with a spruce top with maple back and sides. The pegs, tailpiece, fingerboard, and chinrest are usually made of a hardwood such as ebony or boxwood. There are also electric violins available. Violins are pitched in the key of C with its music being read on the treble clef. It is used in a wide array of musical styles, from classic to jazz to rock and folk.
